Room at various angles.

...Because Edgeworth is very well-off, there will be no question that he will request as much from the castle as he can to feel 'at home.' Therefore, his room will be inspired by a room of one of his favourite hotel suites - the Hazlitts in Soho, London. The hotel room is a bit smaller than it appears in the picture, but is extremely richly furnished and decorated. However, with opulence comes a price, as usual, and because of Edgeworth's fastidious tastes, the castle will inflict upon him at least one temporary loss per month. Unbeknownst to Edgeworth, of course.

At any given time, there will be a book or two on the bed, and others placed sporadically at various crevasses within the room.  There is another, smaller partition of the room containing a couch, small table, and chair. There are a pair of small speakers, a heated blanket, a small fridge with at least two wine bottles, and a heating apparatus that doesn't emit microwaves. There's also a burgundy/blue chess set. There's no television, no futon, and of course, no Oldbag . There is a black box on the desk that requires not only a key to be opened, but a sliding puzzle to be solved. There's also a medium-sized kitchen. The bathroom is nothing particularly fascinating, as he doesn't spend enough time in there to feel the need to expend too much effort in decorating it, and it is much smaller than one may expect after seeing the room. There is, however, a clean bathtub lined with a few red/gold, unused candles.

...I could have played along had I thought that you truly wished to not speak with me. However, judging by the approach, I figured the truth might have been quite the opposite.

Oh, nonsense. Whatever gave you the the impression that leaving me alone is what I want? Surely, I didn't say that.

I think it's the best way to keep myself from worrying about the things you say so much. At least until I can figure out a better way, that is. I don't want to trouble you anymore.

You could have done the same as I - a bit of research. Which leads me to believe that you weren't wholly trying to avoid me. That is besides the point, however...



...Do you remember back home when I'd be so agitated with you - or most people, for that matter - bothering me while I was working? I'd say, 'Get the Hell out of my office, Wright!' and you'd brazenly traipse right on in... I even threw a paper ball at you, once...

I always thought "asking someone you know will be educated on a certain topic" was a form of research. In any case, I do remember what you're talking about. This is different.

When you think on it, by appearance, it really isn't very different - underlying reasons aside. Anyway, I brought that up because it seemed to me that you've always had a knack for doing quite the opposite of what I ask - be it barging into my office when I yell at you to 'go away,' or avoiding me when I ask you to 'stay.'


I am beginning to believe that I should get into the habit of expressing the contrary of what I wish for.

I think you've always struck me as the kind of person who does say the opposite of what you want. I mean... "get out of my office" couldn't have really meant that, or you'd have had Gumshoe or somebody throw me out by force.

Oh, Mr. Wright... What an appalling misjudge of character! You should know very well that I generally mean what I say. To do otherwise would be ...untruthful, would it not? Simply because I won't go to such great lengths as to summon Detective Gumshoe from wherever he happens to be just to throw you out of my office, does not make me any less annoyed. And here I thought you knew me better than that... Frankly, I'm rather hurt. Then again, I thought throwing things at you would have clearly gotten the point across...

So basically you're telling me that one of my major reasons for continuing to try with you in the past--being that I thought you were lying when you said you wanted me to go away--is full of crap and you really did want me to go away?

I was specifically referring to being bothered while at work, not overall. I'd think it's perfectly acceptable to ask that of under such circumstances.

[Sigh. This is one reason why he doesn't want to talk to Edgeworth anymore--these constant arguments, so unnecessary now that there's no courtroom to have them in, and the persistent lack of listening... He plunks his forehead against the journal and groans. headdesk]

This constant hurting each other, back and forth like we always do. I'm tired of it and I'm sure you are, too. I don't think it's possible for both of us to be happy at the same time.

[Persistent lack of listening... Rather, persistent misconstruing of intent and constant misunderstanding... It's harrowing. And Edgeworth fears he may never truly absolve himself in Phoenix's eyes what with his tendency to translate his better intentions negatively ...and though they and their opinions generally differ like night and day...]


...I was thinking the very same thing.

[A pause; he has to drag the words out of himself]

Then it seems like the only viable course of action is to stop spending time with each other, unless of course you have a better suggestion.

Suggestion-wise...? I cannot recall the last time I have ever been at such a loss.

[The pregnant pause that followed weighed heavily upon Edgeworth. This situation was far from ideal in any case, but should his suspicions hold water, then there probably isn't any better way at the very moment. However...what if he was wrong, as he had hoped? Would this be worth it? Is this worth the risk of losing the only one person in the world in whom he places unequivocal trust? Though his insides twisted painfully with the need to object to this idea, for Phoenix's sake more so than his own, he thought that it would have been best should the other man refrain from getting too close to him, having already overstepped his own self-imposed boundaries as is.

Deterring Phoenix from him, how ever the method, was for Phoenix's own protection...

...or so he thought.

It summons every ounce of fortitude in his being at the moment to be able to choke out three, simple words...]
