Room at various angles.

...Because Edgeworth is very well-off, there will be no question that he will request as much from the castle as he can to feel 'at home.' Therefore, his room will be inspired by a room of one of his favourite hotel suites - the Hazlitts in Soho, London. The hotel room is a bit smaller than it appears in the picture, but is extremely richly furnished and decorated. However, with opulence comes a price, as usual, and because of Edgeworth's fastidious tastes, the castle will inflict upon him at least one temporary loss per month. Unbeknownst to Edgeworth, of course.

At any given time, there will be a book or two on the bed, and others placed sporadically at various crevasses within the room.  There is another, smaller partition of the room containing a couch, small table, and chair. There are a pair of small speakers, a heated blanket, a small fridge with at least two wine bottles, and a heating apparatus that doesn't emit microwaves. There's also a burgundy/blue chess set. There's no television, no futon, and of course, no Oldbag . There is a black box on the desk that requires not only a key to be opened, but a sliding puzzle to be solved. There's also a medium-sized kitchen. The bathroom is nothing particularly fascinating, as he doesn't spend enough time in there to feel the need to expend too much effort in decorating it, and it is much smaller than one may expect after seeing the room. There is, however, a clean bathtub lined with a few red/gold, unused candles.

...Well, neither do I. But I clearly recall you becoming highly irate when I had asked. You yelled, "I am not going back to the City, and neither are you!" That's when it all fell apart, am I correct?

I thought you were going back there to stay, which hasn't been disproven yet.

You did not ask.


[He inhales.]


...That day, I was fully intending to return to Paradisa. I was simply asking you to tag along with me as I retrieved my belongings from the City...

...However, following that utterly dismal exchange, I thought it best to change my mind and stay put. "Thank you for reinforcing my decision to leave," I said - do you remember?


After that, I no longer saw a good reason to come back...


...and that is why I am still there.

[He just puts his head face-down on the table and mumbles into it.]

Let me guess. Apologizing profusely won't fix this?

I don't know what there is to 'fix.' I am just reiterating something I have been trying to express to you many, many times. You are far too impulsive, Wright. You are emotionally high-strung and you are far too quick to jump to conclusions and make unfounded assumptions. Oftentimes, when you do, you misconstrue my better intentions and make me out to be...an almost...demonic sort of a person, even when I try to mean well. In all honesty, I'll admit that, given the type of person I once was, I cannot wholly blame you for this. But, this sort of thing happens rather constantly...


[He looks off to the side, fidgeting once again...]


It is rather difficult for me to put this into words. I'd like for you to know that I hold you in the highest esteem, Wright. However, as for the constant misconceptions...the emotional inconsistencies...they grate on me, and to be quite honest, sometimes, I... I simply cannot stand being around you...

[takethat]

[He doesn't say anything to that; neither does he move. He just continues to sit with his forehead pressed against the edge of the table, staring wordlessly at the floor.]

[Oh...Lord. Edgeworth is really starting to regret what he has said already. He weakly croaks:]




...Wright?

[takethat]

I'm... sorry.

[His voice is small and hollow--he's absolutely heartbroken.

And more than a little convinced that such a statement means this friendship is "all over."

He sits up and reaches for his drink, keeping his head bowed and sliding to the end of his seat, trying desperately to hide the fact that he's definitely... crying.]

I'll... I'm going back to my room, okay?

Wait...



[Edgeworth does not see the tears, but the 'hollow' nature of his voice spoke volumes. Even someone as callous as Edgeworth could pick up on such subtleties...

...And his own heart painfully twists into unforgivable shapes as he thinks to confirm his suspicions. He extends his left hand and his fingers reach towards the underside of Phoenix's chin.

If Phoenix will allow for it, he slowly tries to tip his head upward in an attempt to look at his face...]

[He does allow it--his shoulders sagging with defeat all the while. By this time, he's already feeling as though Edgeworth can't possibly think any less of him, so what's the harm in letting him see his tears?]

I... really am sorry.

[...For several, surreal seconds, Edgeworth blankly looks Phoenix in the eye and promptly regrets saying what he did - especially now, on Phoenix's birthday, no less.

He slowly raises himself from his chair, walks to Phoenix's end of the table and kneels down on one knee in front of him, placing a hand atop Phoenix's head...]


...For now, please forget everything I said, earlier...

[He then brings his crying friend in for a hug, directing his head towards his shoulder. With said hand on Phoenix's head and the other wrapped around his midsection, he gazes upward, cursing himself for being the obdurate son of a bitch that he was for emotionally destroying his friend on his birthday - the same friend who he just looked in the eye and claimed to hold him in 'the highest esteem.'


This gesture is done partly as an apology, a gesture of care, and an excuse...

... an excuse to hide the fact that there are now a few tears streaming down Edgeworth's own face, as well.]

[This is all just a little too much for Phoenix. To say it's been an emotional night already would be a severe understatement, and now Edgeworth is hugging him--of his own free will--and actually being comforting?

Quite overcome with all this, Phoenix lets out a single, quiet sob, and wraps his arms around Edgeworth in return. He isn't going to pass up the opportunity to cry it out on Edgeworth's shoulder... he has to cry it out somewhere, after all.]

[This is simply too much for him to handle. He has never seen Phoenix - the great Phoenix Wright, the man famed for his seemingly impeccable resolve and and strength, the man with the budding legacy of continuously 'rising from the ashes' - this broken. Seeing what many other regarded as a pinnacle of strength being brought down like this would make any other man fall to his knees...and he had himself to blame for it. Edgeworth is almost on the verge of panic by now. He nearly chokes out his words as he speaks in a feeble attempt to make it all better somehow...]





Please, forget it...




[His face is stained with tears - not that Phoenix should ever know this, however, lest it makes him feel worse - so, he gently presses his face into Phoenix's tresses in a discreet attempt to get rid of the evidence.]

[He's been taking deep, level breaths, trying to calm himself, as he's moved from despair to sheer embarrassment in the space of a few moments.

Feeling Edgeworth's face pressing into his hair isn't helping at all, unfortunately, and his breath hitches a little too noticeably for his liking at that additional, close contact. Whatever this is, he knows, somewhere through the haze of crying, that he needs to stop it--now.

So, against the wishes of every part of himself, he leans back away from Edgeworth, just enough to wipe furiously at his own eyes, his head still bowed low to keep his messy face from being too visible.]

[He straightens himself and silently watches as Phoenix tries to compose himself, hoping that Phoenix won't be able to pick up on his momentary bout of weakness...]

...u-uh...

[Coughing to clear his throat]

......I'm... not proud of this...

[cantacquityou]

It's alright...


[Has no clue what to say in these sorts of situations...]


...It...happens...

[He reaches for a napkin and wipes his face with it.]

Yeah. I guess it does.

[And takes a deep breath--]

...thanks for... helping. You do take pretty good care of me.

[--and offers the ghost of a smile.]

I haven't done anything...

You gave me a literal shoulder to cry on. That's... a big deal, to me.

[And a hug. Let's not forget that. ...and Phoenix won't be forgetting it, and he's sorry that part is already over.]

...just sorry for falling apart on you.
