Room at various angles.

...Because Edgeworth is very well-off, there will be no question that he will request as much from the castle as he can to feel 'at home.' Therefore, his room will be inspired by a room of one of his favourite hotel suites - the Hazlitts in Soho, London. The hotel room is a bit smaller than it appears in the picture, but is extremely richly furnished and decorated. However, with opulence comes a price, as usual, and because of Edgeworth's fastidious tastes, the castle will inflict upon him at least one temporary loss per month. Unbeknownst to Edgeworth, of course.

At any given time, there will be a book or two on the bed, and others placed sporadically at various crevasses within the room. There is another, smaller partition of the room containing a couch, small table, and chair. There are a pair of small speakers, a heated blanket, a small fridge with at least two wine bottles, and a heating apparatus that doesn't emit microwaves. There's also a burgundy/blue chess set. There's no television, no futon, and of course, no Oldbag . There is a black box on the desk that requires not only a key to be opened, but a sliding puzzle to be solved. There's also a medium-sized kitchen. The bathroom is nothing particularly fascinating, as he doesn't spend enough time in there to feel the need to expend too much effort in decorating it, and it is much smaller than one may expect after seeing the room. There is, however, a clean bathtub lined with a few red/gold, unused candles.

I mean... I chewed you out today, so tomorrow you'll probably find something to complain at me about in return.

Well, if you continue with your spontaneous, emotional outburts, I may. More often than not, your temperament is so erratic that simply trying to piece together what mood you truly are in is like herding dozens of cats. Today was a prime example...

Of course my "temperament is erratic" right now. I'm still upset with you. I want to forgive you and move on and go back to being happy again, but I can't, because you're probably not going to let me. So yeah.

I am not stopping you from being happy. You are.

Fine, Miles, what the hell ever. You know as well as I do that you're just going to go right back to treating me like crap as soon as my birthday is over.

[A pause]

And yet I still... really like you.

[It is high time for some major arm-squeezing, here. Those annoying little primal instincts of his really wants to see this as a possible opportunity. But, Edgeworth acknowledges that he, himself, is a guy - and guys are pretty famous for taking the simplest, most innocent gestures as signs of interest. He bites his lip - acting upon misread interpretations would possibly be the most humiliating thing yet - even more so than having chased Vera around the castle in burnt clothing. Phoenix never hesitates to tell a person that he 'likes' them, after all, Edgeworth being no exception.]

....I will...tell you why I left.

[This is true--with a little alcohol and enough of a reason, Phoenix would probably tell any number of his friends that he "really likes" them, and yet there is something more to it this time. In some small way he recognizes that; there's a bit of himself that knows exactly what he means by those words, though it's remaining buried as long as he can keep it that way.

Edgeworth's words startle him--this seems sudden, but he's glad for a little honesty, so he nods.]

Good... I'd like to know.

I was overwhelmed...and I will admit, some part of which had to do with you.

...right, you said something about seeing too much of me, before you said you weren't going to talk to me for a week.

That was a bit of a different matter. Anyway...

[He inhales deeply before proceeding.]

I had to take time to...collect myself. In your case...

[We have grown closer, so much that I sometimes find myself physically attracted to you.]

We have spoken of this before. I am sure that even you are aware that our rapport has ...changed, to say the least. I cannot be certain whether it is for better or worse, but...

[You exacerbate my hidden, and less-than-honourable desires every time you touch me.]

...you have ...an affectionate nature, I am sure you are aware. I find myself a bit...bothered by it, a times.

[I found myself consumed with guilt for attempting to egg you on and take advantage of you on a few occasions, sometimes without realizing it, myself...]

As a result, I tend to treat you rather dishonourably, only to realize this after the fact...

[I know I cannot fulfill these desires for you. I had to get away from you.]

...For the most part, it is my fault. I thought it would be best if I stayed away from you and broaden the distance between us. I simply do not know how to cope with someone being so close to me...

It...never ends well.

[Phoenix listens intently to all of this, with the understanding that it's hard for Edgeworth to explain his feelings about much of anything. And when Edgeworth is finished with his explanation, Phoenix takes a moment to collect his own thoughts before proceeding, slowly, and quite carefully. There's a lot here that he wants to address, and he's not really even sure where to begin.]

...okay... you have a problem with people being close to you. That much I knew without you having to tell me. It's just the kind of person you are, right? But...

[He passes a hand through his hair.

None of this is easy to make sense of.]

You're bothered by my "affectionate nature?" That's something I don't understand quite so well--that and you treating me "dishonorably." I'm inclined to believe that means I bother you when I hug you or want to hang out with you, and you feel bad for running off and trying to avoid me, but then...

...then, if that was what you felt bad about, you wouldn't want to broaden the distance between us... those statements contradict each other.

[For a moment he mutters incoherently to himself--reasoning this out to the best of his ability (which isn't terribly great where understanding Miles Edgeworth is concerned). And then he fixes Edgeworth with a level gaze.]

...I want some more information on that. The part about treating me dishonorably. Will you clarify what you meant by that?

I-... Well, you said so yourself that I am quite....mean to you. And, admittedly, I tend to....tease you quite a bit...

...yeah, but you're not any meaner to me than you have been for the past few years.

...but, yes, sometimes I have a hard time telling if you're making fun of me or actually serious...

[Perhaps the meaning of the word "tease" is lost on him, here.]

...It all depends.

...in any case, I still think there's something you're not telling me.

[He can read between the lines here enough to know that, even if he can't quite figure out the complete truth. ~~You are an impossible "witness," Miles Edgeworth~~]

If that is the case, then I could say the same for you.

... I wouldn't deny that.

[Sipping his drink.]

Still, it means a lot to me that you told me as much as you did.

[The desire to touch Edgeworth right now is ridiculously strong. Anything--a pat on the shoulder, a hug, a hand atop his--anything, but he won't make a move. His "affectionate nature" is in trouble already.]

...Hm.

...Are you-...?

...am I what?

[In a split-second, his words change course.]

...are you hungry?

....

[He's almost... disappointed?]

...nah, I'm not hungry. Are you?

...A bit peckish, yes. I was wondering if you had wanted to share something with me. I'll just order something small.

...I'll share something.

[Shrug]

It's my birthday for a little while longer--might as well overindulge.

...Indeed.

[Miles orders a sampler of all sorts of seafood - mussels, bacon-wrapped scallops (~~oops you're Jewish~~), shrimps, lobster bites, etc. - and sushi (with a selection of fish ~~for all your Jewishness~~.

...He then sits there and taps his fingers on the table.]

[Well, at least he gets to eat something, though he definitely feels like he's being picked on again, after that order...]

...guess you were pretty hungry. Are they feeding you in the city?
